Easy chocolate Halloween cake

by Elena Levati

Is it possible not to celebrate Halloween with two girls of 4 and 7? Of course not! 😀 So like every year, here I am to offer you a themed recipe based on the cornerstone of simplicity of execution, because the party is even more beautiful if we prepare it together! And this super easy chocolate Halloween cake is the result of our 6-handed work!

For the base I followed my “dessert saver” recipe of the 5 minute chocolate cake: an egg-free cake that can be prepared in 5 minutes, with just a whisk and only a bowl! The only difference compared to my first version, is that here I used butter instead of seed oil (because dad likes it better… poor dad, he needs to be pampered/satisfied too, right?).

Once the base, very soft and moist, is ready we’ll dedicate to the Halloween themed decorations: on a delicious base of dark chocolate ganache, many pieces of chocolate sre the perfect support for some not scary little monsters prepared with only digestive biscuits, some smarties and, of course, more chocolate!

As you can see, everything is very very simple, both in terms of ingredients and execution! But I repeat, for me the party begins in the moment I prepare the decorations and the themed dinner with my two favorite little monsters!;-)

Even the decorations in the house are made by my two little ones: those monsters you see in the background of the photo are potatoes painted and by Olivia and Ludovica and that little ghost is nothing more than a ball of paper covered with a napkin! 😀

In conclusion, we are satisfied with little things, with those not spectacular or phantasmagorical, but definitely made with love and with lots fun!

Then I’d say go to the recipe: it’s true that it takes only 5 minutes, but it’s always better to organize all in time 😉

Attrezzature

  • 22 cm cake tin

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 200 g flour
  • 20 g bitter cocoa
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 160 g sugar
  • 8 g baking powder
  • vanilla
  • 80 g butter
  • 250 ml milk

  • 100 ml fresh cream
  • 100 g dark chocolate

To complete:

  • 50 g dark chocolate flakes

For the little monsters:

  • 80 g melted dark chocolate
  • 16 smarties

Instructions

  • Turn the oven on to 180°C.
  • Combine the milk and butter in a large cup and heat in the microwave for 1,30 minutes at 800 W in order to melt butter.
  • Pour the flour, cocoa, sugar, salt and baking powder into a bowl and mix everything with a whisk.
  • Make a hole in the center and pour in the vanilla and hot milk.
  • Mix everything with a whisk to get a lump-free mixture.
  • Pour the mixture into a buttered and floured 22 cm cake tin.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes. (Do the toothpick test).
  • Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
  • In the meantime, prepare the ganache: chop the chocolate and pour it into a bowl, add the very hot cream and mix well to get a smooth, shiny cream.
  • Let it cool for 5 minutes so that it thickens a little.
  • Turn the cake on a tray and cover with th ganache making sure that it drips a little around the edges.
  • Cover with chocolate flakes.
  • Prepare the little monsters by decorating the digetive biscuits with melted chocolate (use a paper cone) and with Smarties as eyes (use a dot of chocolate to make the pupils).
  • Place the biscuits on the cake just before serving, because the soft and moist base would make them lose their crunchiness!

Notes

  • You have to keep your Halloween cake in the fride, but it’s better to eat it at room temperature.
  • Remember to put the biscuits on the cake just before serving it not to loose crunchiness!
